ROMSAF4P

Radio Occultation Meteorology Satellite Application Facility Fourth-Phase Partnership

Satellite measurements using Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) play a key role in the exploitation domains of weather, climate, and space weather. All satellites in low-Earth orbits operated by the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) carry GNSS-RO instruments and will continue to do so in the future. In this way, multiple GNSS signals are used and global weather and climate observations using GNSS-RO are already planned into the 2040s. The overall goal of the Radio Occultation Meteorology Satellite Application Facility (ROM SAF) Fourth Continuous Development and Operations Phase (CDOP-4) of EUMETSAT, to which this University of Graz-Wegener Center project ROM SAF Fourth-Phase Partnership (ROMSAF4P) contributes, is the effective use of European and global GNSS-RO measurements for weather forecasting, climate monitoring and space weather applications. The research work planned as part of the ROMSAF4P project is seamlessly embedded in the overall ROM SAF CDOP-4 work and is aimed at producing new and innovative datasets through research and development, focusing on long-term climate datasets, and using them in climate change research and for climate monitoring. These results will be of great benefit to the European and global scientific community and to Earth observation users, including organizations such as the European Copernicus Climate Change Service (EU-C3S) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In this way, the ROMSAF4P work, together with the entire ROM SAF CDOP-4 work, also addresses clear and prioritized research and development recommendations as recently produced by the international science and application community on GNSS-RO at the Joint ROM SAF User Workshop and International Radio Occultation Working Group Workshop in September 2019.
