Climate Change Graz Post Doc Fellowship Program 2022

Call for applications

The Field of Excellence Climate Change Graz is offering 3 to 5 post doctoral fellowships at University of Graz, Austria, for 3 months. Dates for stays are somewhat flexible, but ideally run from October to December 2022, in order to encourage collaboration among the fellows. The fellowship will cover costs of travel, housing and subsistence up to € 7,500 in total. Fellows are responsible for their own insurance. The program will assist in finding suitable housing close to the university.

The program is designed for PostDoc researchers (up to 5 years after receiving their PhD; applicants at the final stage of their PhD program can be considered as well) from all academic fields working on climate change who wish to collaborate with one (or more) of the research groups of the Field of Excellence Climate Change Graz. Participants will work under the direct mentorship of an experienced Uni Graz scientist in a unique inter- and transdisciplinary research environment. The research stay should be focused on a specific project, e.g. a joint research program, paper, or grant proposal. Fellows will have the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the Field of Excellence Climate Change Graz's international network.

While the call is open for all topics of climate change – including improved understanding of the processes of climate change, observed impacts and projected risks for natural and human systems, questions of mitigation, adaptation and resilience, or related ethical and legal dimensions – we are specifically interested in contributions to the following interdisciplinary research fields:

  • Interacting Organisms, Environments, and Societies: Interdisciplinary Approaches for Coping with Climate Risks, addressing topics raised in the 2021 IPBES-IPCC Workshop Report on Biodiversity and Climate Change; see Research Groups Functional Diversity and Ecology, Bee Biology and Behavior and Economics of Climate and Global Change
  • Epistemology of Climate Models and Realistic Possibilities in Climate Risk Assessment, see Regional Climate Research Group and Working Section Moral and Political Philosophy
  • Socio-hydrological Approaches to the Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources, see Research Groups Water and Climate Change and Climate Change in Mountain Regions

Applicants can choose to work with two research groups and should indicate their preferred host. We encourage contacting the research group representative(s) who you would like to choose as your host before submitting your application.

All fellows will need to be present at University of Graz, Austria (i.e. no working remotely) for the full duration of the fellowship. Ideally, the fellows will start in October 2022, but late starts will be possible if agreed upon with the host and coordinator of the program.

 

Applications process

Applicants are required to submit a 2-page research proposal for the work they intend to conduct during their fellowship. In addition, a short motivation letter (stating your preferred host and indication of interdisciplinary linkage you want to deepen) and a CV with a complete list of publications is required.

Applications to the 2022/23 program are possible until 6 July 2022 by sending their application material to harald.stelzer(at)uni-graz.at (midnight CEST). Online interviews with the most promising candidates will be held by an interdisciplinary selection committee in July 2022, so that the decision is available in early August 2022.

Circular Bioengineering: FWF Cluster of Excellence aims to revolutionise the product cycle

Take a renewable raw material from nature – wood, for example – break it down into its building blocks and use them to create a functional material, such as a water-repellent surface coating, with the help of green chemistry. Once this has served its purpose, break it down again into its chemical components and use them to build something new. This idea is set to revolutionise the production and life cycle of materials and goods. The Cluster of Excellence "Circular Bioengineering", funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, is researching how to produce products from biomass, develop sustainable methods for the production process, and open options for returning products that have reached the end of their lifetime back into a cycle. The University of Graz is a partner in this Cluster of Excellence, for which the FWF is providing 18 million euros. Including its own funds, the total volume of the project is 27 million euros. Climate change update: ClimateTracer of the University of Graz provides reliable data

Yesterday, the Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union published its data on global warming up to end of November 2024. These confirm that this year will see the 1.5 °C threshold clearly exceeded for the first time. The Wegener Center at the University of Graz already computed an accurate full-year prediction: the global near-surface air temperature in 2024 will rise by 1.62 °C – plus/minus 0.05 °C standard deviation – compared to the pre-industrial level. Such latest predictions for 2024 and other essential data on climate change are provided by the scientists via the Graz Climate Change Indicators (GCCI) portal.

Novel Methods of Semiconductor Manufacturing: University of Graz is partner in EU project

How can technological innovations be aligned with principles of sustainability and circularity? This is a challenge being tackled by researchers at the Department of Environmental Systems Sciences at the University of Graz. As a partner in a new EU project, the team, led by Rupert Baumgartner, is contributing its expertise in sustainability assessment for the semiconductor manufacturing process. The focus of the research project “HaloFreeEtch” is on developing innovative, environmentally friendly etching methods for semiconductors.
