The research group EconClim deals with the socio-economic aspects of climate and environmental change, in particular how humans as individuals and society as a whole contribute to global climate and environmental change and how they are affected by it. Emphasis is placed on the options for action to adapt to global climate and environmental change on the one hand and to mitigate it on the other. The geographical focus of the analysis is on Austria, taking into account the European and global level.
Three research topics are addressed:
- RTEC#1: Socio-economic challenges of a climate-neutral transformation.
- RTEC#2: Cross-sectoral climate risks and trade-offs in adaptation
- RTEC#3: Socioeconomic aspects of the environment and resource use across boundaries and scales.
Within each research theme, the full value chain is covered, from basic research, to basic applied research, to applied (policy-oriented) research.
Sedcard
Through international trade linkages, climate change impacts on other continents also have negative effects on the Austrian economy.
Karl Steininger and his working group on climate economics have calculated that the costs resulting from weather-related events in Austria will rise to between four and nine billion euros per year in the coming decades.
